Have you ever wondered about the difference between a cornerback and a wide receiver? And what in the world does the referee's funny looking hand signals and body gestures mean? For some women, the football season can be the most dreaded time of the year. Many of us do not know the first thing about the game, which makes watching it on television with our spouse or significant others very boring. Football is a very complex game but the best way to enjoy this popular American sport is to understand it. Here's a breakdown of the basics:

The Goal of the Game:

The object of the game is to outscore the opposing team by advancing the football into their endzone for as many touchdowns as possible while preventing them from scoring as few as possible. The touchdown is the prime objective to score.

Warriors, Come Out To Play!

Each team is allowed 11 men on the field at a time. The teams are comprised of an offensive line and a defensive line. The Quarterback is the player who receives the ball from the center at the start of each play before handing it to the running back, throwing it to a receiver, or running with it himself. The quarterback is usually in charge of running the offense (the side that's trying to score) on the field. He is also the guy that informs the offense of the play while in the huddle. The rest of the offensive line is comprised of the Halfback, Fullback, Wide Receiver, Tight End and Offensive Tackle. The defensive players are those big, beefy linemen comprised of the Defensive End, Defensive Tackle, Nose Tackle, Linebacker, Cornerback and Safety.

Playin' the Field :

The field is 100 yards long. It has stripes running across the field at five yard intervals. On the end of the playing field is an end zone. On the very back line of each end zone is a goal post. The area where the endzone and the playing field meets is called the goal line. (This is where weird-looking man-dances are performed when a touchdown is made). The line of scrimmage is the imaginary line drawn where the ball starts in play.

What is a Down?

Basically, a down is a play. A team's offense is given four downs (plays) to move ten yards toward the opponent's endzone. If they make the ten yards needed within four downs, they are given a new set of downs. This is called "getting the first down." If they don't make the required ten yards, the other team's offense takes possession of the ball.

Let's Talk Score!

The main objective for the offense, every time they take possession of the ball is to score a touchdown. A player must carry the ball across the opposing team's goal line, or catch a pass in the end zone. A touchdown is worth 6 points. After making a touchdown, a team can earn an extra point by kicking the ball through the goal posts from the 2 yard line.[Extra Point Conversion].Or it can try for 2 points by tackling an opponent possessing the ball in their own end zone. . Another way for a team to score is by kicking a field goal. If a team has not made a touchdown, it can kick the ball through the goal posts for 3 points.

The Ref:

The referee is the official that has control of the game and is generally the final authority in all decisions. You can tell the referee from the other officials because he is the only one that wears a white hat. All other officials wear black hats. The funny gestures he makes signals any observed event such as a touchdown or a violation of the rules by players.

These tips should help you gain a clearer understanding of the games. The more you know and understand, the more you will look forward to enjoying them. Now you will be able to amaze your man by sitting beside him during the football games, cheering for the favored team and actually having fun!
