It is well known that drinking good, clean water is absolutely essential for human survival. Water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues, just to name a few. A person can live for about a month without food, but only a few days without water. Did you know that increasing your intake of pure, clean water is vital for healthy weight loss? If you have been struggling with your weight, simply drinking more water can be an effective way to lose weight and keep it off. So, what is the correlation between drinking water and weight loss? I've listed a few reasons why you should include water in your weight loss plan.

1. Water Increases Metabolism.

Your metabolism is how fast your body converts food into fuel and burns it. It affects greatly the speed at which you gain or lose weight. To lose weight the body need to burn more calories than is consumed. By drinking adequate amounts of water, your metabolism naturally speeds up to burn more calories giving you more energy. In one study, adults who drank 8 or more glasses of water a day burned more calories than those who drank 4 glasses of water a day. Even mild dehydration can slow metabolism as much as 3%.

2. Suppresses the Appetite.

Curve your appetite by drinking a full glass of water 30 minutes before your meal. This will fill the stomach with liquid has has no calories, so you eat fewer calories during the meal. You will have a feeling of fullness making you less hungry and less likely to overeat. In addition, drinking more water may discourage you from drinking sodas and other acidic, sugary beverages that are loaded with calories and bad for your overall health. Coffee, sodas, teas and other soft drinks contain water but the diuretics in these caffeinated drinks flush the water right out of the body. As part of your diet plan you may want to include foods that contain water like plenty of fruits and vegetables. Researchers says that the water in these foods may fill you up so you eat less. Make this strategy work for you by eating these fruits and veggies- each at least 90% water- to your meals:

FRUITS: Strawberries, cantaloupe, grapefruit, watermelon, oranges.

VEGGIES: Broccoli, cabbage, Romaine lettuce, radishes, celery, spinach, cucumber.

3. Water Hydrates:

We all know that adequate hydration improves the bodys' ability to function properly. The human body is made up of trillions of cells and hydrated cells are healthy cells. How do you know if you're dehydrated? If you are thirsty, your cells are already dehydrated. A dry mouth should be regarded as the last sign of dehydration. Thirst does not develop until body fluids are depleted well below the levels of optimal performance for the body. Monitor your urine to make sure you're not dehydrated.

Adequately Hydrated- Produces clear, colorless urine.

Somwhat Dehydrated- Produces yellow urine

Severely Dehydrated- Produces orange or dark, amber-colored urine.

Good article Connie. Thank you for reminding me of the importance of drinking plenty of water. When I'm well hydrated I feel better. There are times when I don't feel like I need the water, because I'm not thirsty, only to find myself guzzling it all at once - like I've primed the pump or something.

Thanks William. Here's a good way to ensure you're getting an adequate intake of H20 daily. Half your body weight= the amount of water in ounces that your body needs every day. If you work out or engage in other physical activities, you'll need to drink more! Thanks again!!

In my case, that's an awful lot of water Connie. Don't you have to worry about flushing sodium and potassium down to dangerous levels?

Hi William, Yes it is very important that you balance your sodium/potassium intake with your water intake. What you can do is take 1/4 teaspoon of salt per quart of water-- every 4-5 glasses, preferably sea salt. You can find sea salt at the grocery store or the health food store. Include potassium in your diet by eating fruits such as bananas, oranges, apricots, cantaloupe, vegetables like tomatoes and carrots, nuts and seeds, and my personal favorite, chocolate. Start drinking your water in the morning when you are dehydrated and full of toxins. Take regular water breaks throughout the day. To enhance the flavor, add lemon juice, this will also aid in flushing out toxic waste. Drink water before and after eating to help digest your food. I hope this helps! I know you can do this! I welcome your comments, William, thanks!
