If you don't eat breakfast- whether you just don't have a desire for food in the mornings, you're attempting to cut calories or you don't have time to eat, you may be doing more harm than good, especially if you're trying to lose weight.

For many years, I would dash out the door to go to work at my very high stress nursing job with nothing more than a large cup of coffee on board. The results were that at midday, when I might possibly have a slim chance to eat lunch, I would overeat any carry-out fast food I could get my hands on. Afterwards, I would have just enough energy to drag myself home at the end of my shift. I also began to gain weight, especially in the midsection. Now, I know better, and when you know better, you do better! Choosing to skip breakfast can actually be one of the worst things you can do and here's why.

1.) Increased Insulin Response:

After you have slept for 8 hours, your body cries out for food and it needs to refuel it's glucose levels. This prolonged "fasting" when you skip breakfast can increase your body's insulin response. This will increase fat storage and increase weight gain. Not eating can actually increase your risk for obesity!

2.) Decreased Metabolism

Another consequence for skipping the breakfast meal can result in slow metabolism, which causes the body to stop burning calories and fat to lose weight. The body will begin to store fat and break down protein for needed energy, Now you're adding fat and losing muscle, further hindering your weight loss goals.

3.) Decreased Energy

Additionally, without having breakfast, your mental acuity may be slower and muscles will not have the energy they need to sustain activity throughout the day. In short, skipping breakfast is associated with reduced physical and mental performance.

Below are a few good reasons why you should eat a healthy, nutritious breakfast for weight reduction:

4.) Reduced Hunger:

Having breakfast reduces hunger which makes it easier to avoid overeating. When you skip breakfast, you will likely feel very hungry by mid morning and be tempted to grab calorie loaded snacks such as doughnuts, cookies or potato chips.

5.) Increased Energy

Breakfast will give you energy to start the day right! As a result, the increased energy will motivate you to increase your physical activities throughout the day. Maybe you'll want to take a 15 minute power walk during your break. Increasing your physical activities is absolutely essential for weight loss. A healthy, nutritious breakfast recharges your cells and replenishes the glycogen (glucose) stores and protein that supplies your muscles for energy.

6.) Healthier Selections

Your body requires nutrients to function properly. Getting the right amount of these nutrients is necessary for a healthier body. If you start your day by eating a healthy breakfast, you're more likely to eat healthy all day. Having healthy snacks like fruits, veggies and small servings of proteins, for instance, unsalted nuts, yogurt or low-fat cheese during mid-morning or mid-afternoon, will help you avoid overeating at lunch or dinnertime.

Always jump start your day with a nutritious breakfast. Make it part of your dietary plan for successful weight loss. Don't forget to drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. To your good health!

I didn't know about the insulin response, that's really interesting. I never skip breakfast, because I love my coffee and toast, but it's not exactly nutritious, and you've reminded me that I need to do something about that, so thanks!

An article for meditation. It would be wonderful if you add an example of a what a nutritious breakfast would be, so that readers can have a reference. And it is also important to show that having breakfast is not only to achieve weight loss, but to maintain a healthy body weight. Easy read!
