When it comes to your overall health, whatever you nourish your body with on the inside shows up on the outside. A dry, dull complexion can indicate a deficiency of nourishing foods in your daily diet. Healthy skin is something we all want and having vibrant, radiant skin can boost your confidence. The best way to get it is to make some simple changes to your diet. Begin with what you put in your body and you can alleviate skin problems and have a beautiful complexion.

1. Water

You aren't just what you eat, you are what you drink as well. The human body is comprised of about 70% water, because of this, drinking ample amounts of water is absolutely necessary for survival and good health. Water moisturize and ensures proper cellular formation underneath the layers of the skin to give it a healthy, glowing appearance. Drinking plenty of water every day flushes harmful bacteria and toxins out of the body so if you smoke, STOP! Smoking puts deadly toxins back into the body, damages healthy skin and makes it prone to wrinkles and gives it a dull, ashy gray color. Drinking enough good, clean water has been shown to help the body heal itself from skin problems like acne, eczema and psoriasis. Avoid drinking too much caffeine because it dehydrates the body. Drink green tea instead because the antioxidants are good for your overall health, including your skin.

2. Vitamin A

Necessary for cell division and growth. It's anti-oxidant properties help prevent the cancer causing cell damage of free radicals. The best food sources are salmon, mangos, orange and yellow fruits and vegetables such as carrots, squash, and cantaloupes;and leafy green vegetables.

3. Vitamin C

Also called ascorbic acid, Vitamin C is necessary to make collagen, the connective tissue that holds body cells together, and makes the skin smooth and supple. It promotes healing of wounds and burns, and can be effective in reducing wrinkles. As we get older, usually around 35 years old, the skin starts to sag due to the breakdown of collagen. Citrus fruits are loaded with Vitamin C and are in season all winter. A few dietary sources of Vitamin C include oranges, grapefruit, mangos, lemons, kiwi, nectarines, raspberries, strawberries. Blueberries are especially good for skin because they help the body make collagen.

4. Vitamin E

The rich oils in Vitamin E moisturize dry skin, and its antioxidants protect against skin damage and premature aging. Seeds and nuts are very high in Vitamin E- specifically almonds, dry roasted peanuts, walnuts, sunflower seeds, hazelnuts. Other food sources include eggs, vegetable oils, margarine and mayonnaise.

Tip: Portion control is important when snacking on nuts because of the high calories and fat content. Eat sparingly, only a handful should be enough!

5. Avocados

Although it is often mistaken for a vegetable, the avocado is a fruit. Has useful amounts of protein, Vitamins A, C, E and B6 that are beneficial for nourishing the skin inside and out! It is the main ingredient in guacamole that's often served up as a party dip. The avocado has more fat and calories than any other fruit so consume with caution!

Try this avocado and honey mask that's great for moisterizing dry skin. You'll need:

1/2 avocado

1/4 cup honey

Best to use a fresh, ripe avocado; mash in a bowl until smooth and creamy

Add honey and mix well-- apply to skin- leave on 10 minutes

Rinse with cool water.

6. Fish

Oily fish such as sardines, salmon and mackerel are high in omega-3 fatty acids which helps to reduce redness and inflammation and relieve dry, itchy skin. Salmon is also rich in astaxanthin- a carotinoid that increases the elasticity of skin.

The bottom line is this: in order to have healthy, glowing skin it's very important that we eat a healthy, well balanced diet that contains plenty of fruits, vegetables and omega-3 fatty acids. Drink plenty of water, quit smoking, always wear sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, and use excellent skin care products.
